Speaking with a friend or loved one about depression can be a very uncomfortable situation. Trying to decipher another’s mental cues and body language can be like trying to navigate in a new city with no GPS. If you believe someone in your life is struggling with the feeling of depression, there are ways to approach them and ways NOT to approach them.
Health Magazine shares an interesting article some of the ways a conversation should be conducted when comforting a loved one. In the article, it is suggested to show you care by following these topics: I’m here for you, you matter, let me help, depression is real, there is hope, you can survive this, I’ll do my best to understand, you won’t drive me away, I care about you, and we’ll get through this together.
If you notice the topics described all have one thing in common. They focus the conversation to be about the person in need of affection and understanding. The topics to avoid are things about yourself or others and their experience. Every person handles depression and other mental disorders differently and therefore no one treatment works for everyone. It is important to let them know you are there for them and they can confide in you when needed. Although it can be uncomfortable to discuss depression with a friend or loved one, it can make a large impact in their recovery.
